Business Liability Umbrella
SGI CANADA’s Business Liability Umbrella insurance policy is designed to complement your Business’ existing primary liability insurance by providing excess liability limits beyond those included in their commercial property and auto policies. It also provides additional, broader coverage not often found in most other primary policies – essentially filling the gaps in, and across, existing policies.
Who needs umbrella?
Business Liability Umbrella insurance is for the commercial client who has considerable financial assets and/or an increased exposure to liability risks – like being located in a multi-business property (shopping mall) or ships product abroad. If you meet one or all of these criteria, you may need more liability protection:
- Their business is potentially impacted by large legal settlements.
- Have a wide variety of business dealings, transactions or other activity.
- Have operations in multiple locations.
- Have business activities that take them outside Canada or North America.
- Own multiple business storefronts, warehouses or distribution centres.
- Own multiple commercial-use vehicles for delivery or sales, specifically outside their normal business area.
Policy Features
An umbrella policy is not simply an excess limit policy. While it does provide a set amount of excess coverage, there are a number of ways in which it may respond differently by providing broader coverage or allowing the umbrella to drop down to fill gaps in coverage. This may include coverage excluded in the underlying policy or where the underlying policy coverage limit has been exhausted.
Feature highlights include:
- Excess commercial liability coverage – for bodily injury and property damage over underlying Commercial General Liability (CGL) policies.
- Expanded Definition of Bodily Injury – includes disability, mental anguish or other mental injury resulting from bodily injury.
- First dollar defense coverage – covers defense costs from the first dollar where coverage is provided by the umbrella but not in the underlying policy. Payment of defense costs will not reduce the limit of insurance.
- Worldwide coverage – includes worldwide liability coverage, excluding auto.
- No deductible/No Self-Insured Retention – clients only pay deductibles associated with underlying policies, the standard umbrella policy has self-insured retention.
- No endorsement for Additional Insured – if they've been added to the underlying CGL policy, they're automatically included under the umbrella policy without further endorsements.
